The semi-automatic formal indexing of tables of contents

With the C-3 “Plus” software package, articles are extracted by title, author and page number according to the catalogue and enriched with metadata from union catalogues and standards databases.

C-3 Plus supports the free-form and rule-based approach to indexing and offers partially automated workflows.

As a module of the BCS-2 software, C-3 Plus uses some of its convenience functions, such as

  • automatic quick recognition of text blocks
  • comprehensive indexing capabilities
  • Structural data acquisition
  • Image processing functions

In addition to the digitisation of tables of contents or the integration of existing digitised material into the indexing process, the software package can also be used to generate various network-compatible exchange formats.

“… The biggest advantage of the C-3 software compared to the traditional production method, in which the metadata were typed, is the speed and thus the saving of time…” (Excerpt from the user report of the Tübingen University Library below).

  • semi-automatic extraction of articles from tables of contents
  • Output of bibliographical article title data (title, author, page numbers, etc.)
  • Enrichment and administration of related metadata (title data e.g. ISSN, issue, issue number and GND-ID)
  • Processing of multi-column and tabular tables of contents
  • Recognition of multilingual tables of contents
  • realized as Unicode application (UTF-16), support of Cyrillic, Greek and Slavic characters
  • comfortable diacritics handling, name setting, automatic page interval calculation
  • Generation of composite compatible delivery formats (C3 XML, MARC 21 XML, PICA+, PICA3)
  • optional rule-based recognition and assignment of attachment data or recognition in “free-form” mode on a page-by-page basis
  • Use of special BCS-2 Office/Professional functions
  • configurable user interfaces and workflows
  • Scanning or processing of external digitised material
  • comfortable image editing (masking, scaling)
  • integrated OCR (Tesseract), optional ABBYY
  • Use of comfort functions e.g.
    • automatic quick recognition of text blocks
    • extensive indexing, structural data acquisition
    • Image processing functions
    • Metadata enrichment with transfer of standard data
    • Correction of special characters
  • Generation of compound-compatible export formats
  • C-3 Plus can be used as a standalone solution
