Gray levels
Gray levels are made from photographic or graphical originals that have more brightness levels than just black and white. The most common format is the 8 bit gray-level bitmap.
Here, 0, the lowest value, represents black and 256, the highest value, represents white. All values in between are linearly distributed in this range.
